Glittering Stones
Star of Sierra Leone,

It is the most exquisite emerald cut stone, originated in Diminco mine located near Sierra Leone, Western African region, in 1972. When found, it was with the massive weight of 968.9 carats and was considered to be third largest diamond ever discovered. The huge rough stone was cut into smaller stones of varying sizes and the piece with larger size was acquired by Harry Winston, a renowned diamond dealer, who christened the stone as "star of Sierra Leone".

Characteristics of the diamond :

The rough stone is colorless and lustrous with an enormous weight of 968.9 carats, and then it is cut into 17 smaller stones, among them 13 were flawless. The stone was again re-cut to eliminate the internal inclusions and in order to obtain a proper size of 53.96 carats, it has undergone a rigorous cleavage process. After the cutting and cleavage process is done, the finished product is a pear-shaped, color less, flaw less stone with tremendous brightness and it is described as "glass", "transparent", etc. The absence of color imparting impurities such as nitrogen, boron and hydrogen, makes the stone absolutely colorless. When earthed the gem was not affected by any plastic deformation, so it possess a proper structure. Hence, the stone is chemically pure and structurally perfect.

History of the stone :

In 1972, the exotic stone was discovered in Diminico (Diamond Mining Company) mines, Sierra Leone. The stone holds the fame that it was the largest alluvial diamond ever discovered in the world. Harry Winston, great diamond and jewelry dealer purchased the stone, in the same year it was discovered. Lazare Kaplan, the renowned master cutter, undertook the cutting and cleaving process of the stone. The huge rough stone was cleaved into 17 pieces of varying sizes, out of which, 13 stones were top quality diamonds. The larger piece was again re-cut to 53.96 carats, pear shaped, and flawless diamond. Six of the star of sierra diamonds were set in the renowned "star of sierra Leone" brooch, by Harry Winston.
