Shah Diamond,
Shah diamond was earthed in Golconda mines, Andhra Pradesh, India. The stone is also called as "Throne diamond", since it adorns the throne of Aurangzeb, son of Shah-Jahan. This 88.7 carat yellow stone is the only diamond in the world, which is in the shape of a coffin.
Exquisite features of the stone :
Shah diamond is a yellow colored, table cut, elongated octahedron stone, weighing 88.7 carats. The eight original faces of the stone are replaced by fifteen facets, in order to obtain an elongated octahedron structure, which resembles the shape of a coffin. It is extremely flawless without any inclusions and possesses exceptional clarity. The elegance of the stone is enhanced by employing the typical Indian lasque cut. A thread is accommodated inside the stone with the help of a groove, which has been cut around the stone, so that it is easy for the wearer to wear it around the neck. The facets of the stone are engraved with the names of the three Shah rulers.
History :
In the 16th century, the diamond was discovered in Golconda mines, India and found its way to the kingdom of the great Mughal emperor, Akbar. In 1605, after the death of Akbar, it was descended to his son Shah Jehangir and later passed down to Shah-Jahan, who ordered to carve his name in the facet of the diamond. Aurangzeb, son of Shah-Jahan mounted the diamond in his throne. In 1738, Nadir Shah seized the stone to Persia and it remained there more than a century. After passing through several Shah Rulers, the stone rested in the treasure of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. The commencement of Russian revolution, led to the removal of the stone from Russian crown jewels and later, it reached Kremlin diamond fund, Moscow. The stone remains in Kremlin till today.
