Sardonyx is a variant of onyx that belongs to the family of chalcedony, a silicate mineral. The colorful banded appearance of the gemstone is due to the stacking of tiny quartz fibers. The alluring gem derives its name from Greek words "sard", meaning reddish brown, and "onyx", which means "veined gem". Sardonyx is a unique variety of onyx with mesmerizing reddish brown layers and alluring white banding. The stone closely resembles carnelian, the only difference is that its color is slightly darker than carnelian.
