ABOUT GUBELIN GEM LAB:

EDITORIAL:

The origins of the Gubelin Laboratory go back to the early part of the last century. In the 1920's, the House of Gubelin recognised the need for, and value of, a wide and well founded knowledge of the gemstones it mounted in its own pieces of jewellery. From these beginnings, a standard of excellence and tireless devotion to the development of the science of gemmology brought international esteem and recognition to the Gubelin Laboratory.

HISTORY:

Towards the beginning of the 20th century, Eduard Gubelin Sr. became convinced of his company's need to be knowledgeable, equipped and ready to cope with the challenges which were facing the gemstone and jewellery industry at that time. The first part of the last century had witnessed dramatic changes. Gemstone wholesalers, jewellers and consumer alike no longer had to only contend with readily recognisable gemstone imitations, such as glass. The industry at that time was faced with challenges, which are common today, with the advent of the first true synthetic gemstones (i.e. synthetic rubies and spinels) and cultured pearls, that threatened the stability and the future of the jewellery industry.

TEAM:

The Gubelin Gem Lab presently has a staff composed of six gemmologists with a combined experience of gemmological analysis exceeding 90 years.

Dr. EDUARD GUBELIN:

Dr. Eduard J. Gubelin was born into a watch making family on 16 March 1913, as the first son of Eduard Gubelin Sr. and Maria née Schriber. Eduard Gubelin studied earth sciences at the universities of Zurich and Vienna, earning a Ph.D. in mineralogy in 1938. It was during the 1936-37 winter term in Vienna, while studying under Prof. Hermann Michel, that he first learned to distinguish inclusions in gems and appreciate their significance to the identification of gemstones. After obtaining his doctorate, Dr. Gubelin earned, as the only second European, a Certified Gemmologist diploma in 1939 at the GIA in Los Angeles. After his studies, he returned to his father’s business in Lucerne. In the years to come, together with his brother Walter, they led the Gubelin firm with outstanding distinction, continuing the standards of excellence which had been set by their father.

Gubelin Gem Lab is an independent member of the Gubelin Holding. Apart from the Gubelin Gem Lab, the Holding consists of five other sister companies, each an independent entity with it's own strategic goals, operations and legal form.
